IWAN HLUSZOK It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Iwan Hluszok on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at Holy Family Nursing Home, ten days short of his 80th birthday. Iwan was born July 5, 1922 in Lapshyn, Ukraine to Michael and Anna (Sydor) Hluszok. He was educated in local schools attaining his grade 12. The Second World War interrupted his studies towards obtaining a Chartered Accountants degree. In 1943 he joined the Halychyna Division to fight for an independent Ukraine. After the war he was relocated to England where he met and married Kateryna (1949). In 1956 they immigrated to Winnipeg where as a new immigrant with a young and growing family he worked at numerous jobs, eventually retiring from Bristol Aerospace Limited as a machinist. In Winnipeg he actively participated in a number of organizations; The League for the Liberation of Ukraine, Ukrainian Canadian Institute Prosvita, Ukrainian Youth Association (SUM), Vera Credit Union and Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. Dad had three priorities in life: his family, his desire to see a free Ukraine and his poetry. He devoted his love to his family, but the proudest moments were when he was blessed with the arrival of his grandsons who brought him many moments of joy. All of his life Iwan fought for an Independent Ukraine. In 1996, after a 53 year absence he was re-united with his family in Ukraine. At age 75, Dad realized his second dream by publishing a book of his poetry entitled "My Sons", Ternopil, 1997. Iwan is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Kateryna, children, Zenon (Cindy), Ihor (Denise) and Myroslawa (Mark) and grandsons, Adam, Adrian, Anton and Daniel, his sister Anastasia, and numerous relatives and friends in Ukraine, Canada and the USA. His parents Michael and Anna, and sister Anna predeceased him. Prayers will be sung at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 am Friday, June 28 at the Cathedral with Rev. Michael Kouts officiating. Internment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. The family expresses its deepest appreciation to Dr. Gorski, the nursing staff and volunteers of Holy Family Nursing Home for their devoted physical and spiritual care of Dad. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Children of Chernobyl Fund. VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
